Tethering is a simple but powerful management tool for unsupervised moments when you need your hands free but your puppy close.
Tethering uses a leash to safely secure your puppy to a fixed point, (such as yourself, an object, or an anchor) and hanging out nearby while supervising. Tethering helps bridge the gap between constantly engaging with your puppy and your puppy being alone, ie when crated.
• Teaches puppies how to settle— a skill that doesn’t come naturally
• Teaches your puppy that your presence doesn’t always mean the need to engage
• Encourages them to work through frustration, overcome stress, and develop problem solving skills
• Provides supervision to prevent:
– Potty accidents
– Destructive behaviors
– Digging, jumping, and nipping
• Allows for controlled socialization by creating space to safely observe new people, dogs, and environments
• don’t keep the leash too long (4-6 ft)
• make sure your puppy’s physical, mental, and potty needs have been met before you tether
• start with short tether sessions and slowly build duration as they start to understand the rules
• leave a comfy bed or access to their crate
• stay close but do not pet or interact with your puppy during their tether time
• can provide a toy or long-lasting chew
⚠️ ALWAYS supervise your puppy when tethered. NEVER leave a tethered puppy unattended!
