The winter season is not only a threat to humans but also to our pups. A lot of pet owners assume that their fur will protect them during the harsh weather. One of the biggest concerns is how to protect their paws. Listed below are a few tips on how to keep them healthy and keep them from freezing.
Salt that they cover driveways and sidewalks with to melt the ice is very dangerous to your pet. The salt can create chemical burns on their paws and after licking, they could ingest some of the salt. To prevent either of these from happening try to walk your dog on grass or snow instead of sidewalks. When you come back inside, wipe both their paws and your shoes with warm water and a cloth. If you see your pup limping or walking funny make sure to take him to the veterinarian as soon as possible because he may be hurting.
When dogs have sore paws they could develop ice balls between their pads and toes. This usually occurs when dogs have really hairy feet. You can prevent this by keeping them trimmed throughout the winter.
Keep your dog inside as much as possible this winter. Dogs who are left outside for hours are at risk of frostbite and hypothermia. Also, cut your walking time short.
There are plenty of products out there for you to keep your dogs paws protected. Applying wax to their paws everyday can keep them from cracking or bleeding. Keep a humidifer in the house to prevent dry skin. Purchase ice melt that is safe for animals. Dressing them in dog booties can decrease their chance of stepping on hidden objects in the snow. It may take a while for them to get use too but in the end they will thank you. Dog booties are just another way of protecting their paws.
